Water Treatment for Major Road Construction – Brisbane, QLD

Location: Kingsford Smith Drive, Brisbane

Client: Lendlease Engineering

Duration: Ongoing

Project Overview:

Lendlease required a specialist water treatment contractor to work on the Kingsford Smith Drive Upgrade Project between Hamilton and Eagle Farm in Brisbane, QLD. The project involves widening the existing road from four to six lanes with additional pedestrian and cycle path facilities. Due to the proximity of the road to the Brisbane River, a large part of the project involves installing concrete piers into the river sediments to support the new roadway. Clearpro’s primary role on the project is to treat the water which comes out of the steel casings during the process of pouring the concrete piers. The water which is generated during this process contains both river sediments and concrete slurry, which leads to elevated pH, turbidity and suspended solids levels. High concentrations of dissolved metals are also an issue on the project as the river sediments are known to have elevated metals concentrations and acid sulfate soil deposits.

Treatment of the affected water is achieved through a state of the art Clearpro water treatment plant which is able to autonomously control pH and turbidity levels. The systems are equipped with offsite monitoring capabilities (telemetry) which allows for full recovery of water discharge data and automatic shut-down and alarm functions if the discharge water quality does not comply with the relevant criteria.
